Read on for Justine’s take on how to make the right decision- “It’s a first generation device, so keep that in mind. If you are the type that upgrades, don’t buy the top of the line yet (unless you find it helps with eBay resales).
We have a 16GB wifi. We have wifi only because we needed one right away (for testing our iPad app) and 16GB because we are trying to keep costs low.
–Wifi or 3G? If you think you’ll use the iPad outside the comfort of your own home wifi, you’ll want to consider the 3G+wifi. You can buy monthly plans (on top of any mobile phone plans you have already), but there is no contract, so you can turn them on/off at will, if you would only want the 3G for traveling on a vacation, for example. It is nice to have the 3G as an option, though I haven’t had the need yet.
Consider if you tether your laptop or not–it’s the same idea. The iPad is bigger, so you will not tend to take it with you wherever you go, unless you did that with your laptop. And, this is also a 1st generation device, so you might wait til later to add 3G?
–16GB, 32GB, or 64GB. Most people are finding that the 16GB is adequate–unless you watch a lot of movies. Then you’ll want to go for a bigger model. I’m not sure I’d go for the 64GB on a 1st generation device, unless you consume a lot of media, buy a lot of apps, load a lot of photos and music. It’s not as portable as an iPod (you wouldn’t go running with your iPad), so you’d use it differently–keep that in mind.
So in summary, my 16GB wifi-only has been adequate for a 1st generation device. We’ll be to taking it on vacation this summer, so we’ll see if no 3G is a factor, or if we have enough room to load it up to keep everyone happy. What you choose really depends on your consumption, habits, and whether or not you tend to upgrade at each new device release.”
